The residency will support individuals whose work focuses on our shared responsibility to one another and the planet.

Thirty six years after the handshake with Adam Hochschild (see accompanying article) that confirmed the founding of BMC, Harriet Barlow is heading west. Over the years we have been witness to Harriet’s myriad roles—shepherdess, confidant, inspiration, constructive critic, camp counselor.
Blue Mountain Center is a testament to her singular mix of passion, creativity and clear-eyed diligence. She has built—or as she would certainly insist I say—she has helped to build not only a nurturing institution but a vibrant community and active network, all working to create a just, equitable and sustainable society.
To honor Harriet’s work we are establishing the Harriet Barlow Residency. Each year, the residency will enable and celebrate not only a person but a concept central to her moral vision—the Commons— those natural gifts (e.g. air, water, wildlife) and social creations (e.g. libraries, scientific research, public spaces) we all share. The fight to protect and restore the Commons is also a fight to restore a central place for the “we” and “ours” in a world now dominated by “me” and “mine”.
The residency will reify this philosophy by supporting individuals whose work focuses on our shared responsibility to one another and the planet. Qualified candidates will include activists, artists and creative leaders. To launch the residency, we need to raise an endowment of at least $100,000. Any additional funds will be used to support relevant convenings and other activities.

As I write this note, the Adirondacks’ air is getting crisp and ice is creeping across the lake. The beautiful north country winter beckons. We look forward to a 2018 residency and conference season that will reflect and build on Harriet’s legacy.
Thank you for being part of the vibrant BMC community Harriet initiated and nurtured.
